Much to my dismay, this old PC works with ESX4i - I was looking forward to buying some new gear, but these old PCs are good for anything, so far, despite my ongoing bashing of the manufacturer...

Onboard ICH7 and Broadcom Gigabit (tg3)
1TB Western Digital SATAII HDD

No special steps or additional hardware, just worked first install.

The SATA device is in IDE emulation mode.

I must point out though, I read somewhere that ESX4i only works on 64bit processors, I don;t know if this is true or not, but this PC has a Pentium 4 630 (one of the first EMT64 processors).

File comment: Screenshot of summary page.

I'm just the opposite:

My to my DELIGHT, I found the ESXi 4.0 and the rest of the vSphere 4 package were easy to install on my HP dc7900 PC. I bought it this winter to test out VM's and run Workstation, and since upgraded it to ESXi instead. Right now the HP is hosting 6 VM's, including a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) that runs the vCenter Server, as well as a SQL server and web server.

I upgraded the HD's to 1TB SATA drives (2 of them) and so far, so good. It's been running production VM's for a couple of months now, with more being added all the time.

I've installed ESXi 5 to a USB drive on a DC7900 and I get a PSOD upon booting. I think I tried both GPT and MBR formatting of the USB stick (used formatwithmbr option after Shift-O). Going back to 4.1 U1.
