Post EVGA X58 SLI & ESXi 4.1 702113 with Realtek NIC
- Board: EVGA X58 SLI Part Number: 132-BL-E758-TR BIOS 83xx
- Southbridge: Intel 82801JR (ICH10R) rev. 00
- NIC: On Board Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) (PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_816810EC&REV_02)
- CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ 8MB L3 Cache
- HDD: 2x WD6401AALS-00L3B2 (Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB)
- RAM: 24 GB (6x 4GB G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL)

BIOS
-SATA mode: AHCI
-Enable VT (under "CPU Feature" from the "Frequency/Voltage Control")
-Continue on Keyboard error (to boot without keyboard)

Use the RTL8111_8168-8.018.00_P55_integr_SATA_Ctrl.(AHCI).oem.tgz from
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1272&p=9462#p9462
But didn't work. Was kind of half working, e.g when I open google got: "400 Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request. That’s all we know."
This one by frutis
viewtopic.php?f=12&p=7412#p7412 oem-r8169-esx4.1.tgz worked but slow, I changed the network port and now seems to be fast. I report back in case goes slow again.

I fix only the NIC driver after the install (copies VM and the vSphere client worked fine)
1) cd tmp
2) mkdir oem
3) cd oem
4) cp /bootbank/oem.tgz oem.tgz
5) gzip -d oem.tgz
6) tar -xvf oem.tar
7) rm oem.tar

Make your changes (copy r8169.o and rename to r8168.o)

8) tar -cvzf oem.tgz etc lib sbin usr var
9) cp oem.tgz /bootbank/oem.tgz
10 reboot

Also in vSphere the board only shows up as OEM

First try Realtek Driver viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1272&p=9462#p9462
Code:
~ # esxcfg-nics -l
Name    PCI           Driver      Link Speed     Duplex MAC Address       MTU    Description
vmnic0  0000:07:00.00 r8168       Up   1000Mbps  Full   00:1f:xxx       1500   Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller
vmnic1  0000:08:00.00 r8168       Down 0Mbps     Half   00:1f:xxx       1500   Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller

~ # ethtool -i vmnic0
driver: r8168
version: 8.018.00
firmware-version:
bus-info: 0000:07:00.0

Second try Realtek Driver frutis viewtopic.php?f=12&p=7412#p7412
Code:
~ # esxcfg-nics -l
Name    PCI           Driver      Link Speed     Duplex MAC Address       MTU    Description
vmnic0  0000:07:00.00 r8169       Up   1000Mbps  Full   00:1f:xxx       1500   Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller
vmnic1  0000:08:00.00 r8169       Down 0Mbps     Half   00:1f:xxx       1500   Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller

~ # ethtool -i vmnic0
driver: r8169
version: 2.2LK-NAPI
firmware-version:
bus-info: 0000:07:00.0

Still highly recommend to not bother with the on Board and go for a supported Intel NIC !!!

/var/log/messages has a lot of these. But copy via vCenter Converter gives me ~25 MB/s

well today was the day when I got a Intel for my box. the Realtek even with the "frutis" driver was too unstable.

Now running
Code:
esxcfg-nics -l
vmnic2  0000:03:00.00 e1000e      Up   1000Mbps  Full   68:05:ca:09:21:94 1500   Intel Corporation Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter

detail
Code:
~ # ethtool -i vmnic2
driver: e1000e
version: 1.1.2-NAPI
firmware-version: 1.8-0
bus-info: 0000:03:00.0

again the rule came true. don't mess with non OOTB driver and stick to a Intel nic (the $30-40 are well worth the less trouble)

cheers
