Was previously running just 2 Dell Dimension 5150 with 3GB of ram, so this custom build has loads more capacity for pretty low costs. My FreeNAS box was more but then again it does have an LSI raid card and nice backplane

BTW, if anyone is going for this board for a whitebox, then be aware that one of the PCI slots has the battery just behind it, so this can be an issue if fitting PCI-X/PCI cards like I have. The other 2 PCI slots have good clearance for my PRO/1000 MT Dual cards, the restricted one is fine with a single card tho

Great screenshots! Look at all of those vSwitches and NICs More memory is definitely good. I have 16G in my build and when the VMs aren't doing much it isn't needed, but when activity picks up the extra RAM is very nice for performance, especially on the MS Windows VMs. What will you be using your machine for? Mine is pretty much just a hobby, though I am putting up a web server and running DNS on one Linux VM, and have installed MySQL on another Linux system. Jake

Jake Thanks, its just a test area for me to practice with, we have much more complex boxes at work so the test setup at home is very handy My setup isnt 100% yet as I am seeing a couple of bottle necks but its getting there. I think my switch maybe letting me down, need to test with a known good one.

That's quite a setup. Are you performing VLAN tagging with the switch? What switch is it?
I'd like to have something better for my home network, but can't justify the expense ... unless I could find something very inexpensive on eBay.

I am using vlans but had issues tagging them at the ESXi end so I have untagged setup. Its easy for me as I have a simple physical / logical setup. I am also using Link Aggregation between my NAS (FreeNAS) & switch (BayStack 380), the switch was £70 on ebay
