Got ESXi 4.0 working without problems while booting from an USB stick (4GB) with following specs:

MB Foxconn Renaissance http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/Motherboards/detail_spec.aspx?ID=en-us0000431

MB supports Intel VT (Activated in BIOS)

Chipset Intel X58
CPU Intel Core i7 920 2.66@3.2 GHz Socket 1366
BIOS 080015
RAM 3 * 2GB Kingston PC3-10700H@667 Mhz

SATA Intel ICH10R with 2 * 640GB HDD SATA Mode (Non RAID)
SAS Marvell 64xx/63xx 2 Ports (not tried)
NIC onboard 1 GBit: Broadcom 5786

SATA and NIC work out of the box, no patching needed.

I configured an iSCSI datastore on a Qnap NAS TS-219 which worked without flaws.
