Post My first adventure with ESXi
Hi all. With the help of these forums, I have successfully setup ESXi 4.1u1 on the following system -

ASUS M4A87/TD-USB3 Motherboard - Latest BIOS, USB3, Audio, and C1E disabled, onboard Realtek 8168/8111E ethernet controller working(this was the biggest issue)
AMD Phenom x6 1055t
16GB GEIL DDR3-1333MHz
5x WD Green 1TB hdds

A big thanks to the Customizing oem.tgz threads :D
So far only have TurnKey File Server running on it, Plan to have SmoothWall, and Windows 2008R2 as well.

In all honesty - it's not worth the hassle with onboard Realtek ethernet. I ended up getting 3x Intel Pro/1000MT dual port NICs off ebay for like $25 each. (Only got 3 cause they were $AUD105 to buy from an australian supplier)

To expand upon this a bit more (I noticed my post is linked from the main HCL now) - You can get the onboard Realtek ethernet working, but it is just not worth it - I went through about 3 or 4 different installs until it did work with various drivers. Throughput speed is very inconsistent and not very fast, and the device will fall over under heavy use - this requires a full system restart.
You are much better just getting an Intel ethernet controller.

Thanks for the information. To be clear, the onboard SATA controller worked without modification to oem.tgz?

Thanks,
Dave

Hello, how are you doing? did you try to install ESX with a ICH 10R SATA controller? I'm not able to do this. I think that I should add the driver to installation, but I can't find the driver... Thanks in advance

What mode do you have the controller in?

Do you mean if it's on RAID or SATA on bios? It's on RAID, configured RAID 1+0. During the installation it doesn't detect the RAID, but four disks are detected Ok
