Post ASUS Sabertooth X58 & Intel NIC with SATA II
- Board: ASUS Sabertooth X58 (BIOS 0902)
- NIC: Intel PCI PRO
- CPU: LGA 1366 Intel i7 950
- HDD: 2x WD6402AAEX Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache
- RAM: 24GB CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9 (2x Corsair Vengeance 12GB 3X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 XMP Triple)

- Enable Intel VT-d enable in BIOS (Intel Virtual Tech was already enabled)
- Disabled on board NIC in BIOS
- Storage mode AHCI in BIOS (HDD on SATA II connector! as doesn't work on SATA III Marvel 9128 see also here: http://spininfo.homelinux.com/news/VMware_-_Performance/2010/12/07/ESXi_4.1_install_on_a_Marvell_9128_Controller_fails)

I used ISO "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0.update1-348481.x86_64.iso" with "unetbootin-windows-494.exe" (need old due to "menu.c32: not a COM32R .3age”)
created ks.cfg file and modified syslinux.cfg and isolinux.cfg.

Thanks for all the valuable information on this page.

Do you have your HDD in a RAID? I have the same board but if I turn AHCI off I don't get RAID, and if I get RAID set up ESXi installer does not recognize the RAID/controller. How did you get yours to work with RAID?

I am also using the same iso "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0.update1-348481.x86_64.iso" with "unetbootin-windows-494.exe"

Thanks in advance.

If it's using a software RAID controller like the Intel ICH or Storage Matrix families then ESXi doesn't support RAID mode (all you'll see is individual disks).

Ok yes I am just using hoping to use software RAID provided by MB but now confirmed it does not work, thanks. Maybe I was mistaken he was running RAID because original poster stated he had 2 drives:

HDD: 2x WD6402AAEX Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM

Do you know why would he need 2 drives if ESXi can only see 1?

This error comes from the installer not being able to recognize a NIC in your system. You can add something like an Intel Pro/1000 or look at a community compiled driver if you have a realtek or marvel NIC.
