Post ASUS M4A88T-M
I've got VMware ESXi 4.1 working on the following setup:

Motherboard: ASUS M4A88T-M (BIOS: 2202)
Chipset: AMD880G/SB710
CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1055T (125w)
Memory: OCZ 4 GB DDR3-1333 Kit (OCZ3G1333LV4GK)
Network: 2x Intel IntelĀ® EXPI9301CTBlk (IntelĀ® 82574L chip)
Harddisk 1: Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB (AHCI S-ATA port 1)
Harddisk 2: Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB (AHCI S-ATA port 2)
Optical Drive: LG GH22LS30 (IDE S-ATA port 6)
CASE: Lian Li PC-V531B

Additional settings:
Disabled Serial and LPT port
Disabled USB support
Disabled Realtek Network Controller (r8169)
Disabled Realtek Audio Controller
Disabled C1E
Sata ports 1-4 AHCI
Sata ports 5-6 IDE

All settings above are required to install VMware ESXi without encountering any problems. The Serial/ LPT and Audo controller can be turned on, I disabled them as I don't use them).

Please note: Set the S-ATA ports 1-4 to AHCI and 5-6 to IDE. The install was stuck on detecting the second?? S-ATA controller (port 5-6) if it was set on AHCI. Setting it to IDE did the trick. I've also connected the S-ATA DVD-ROM drive to port 6, this helps to detect the CD-ROM in the install phase.
