Lenovo ThinkCentre M57e model 6305b6u works with ESXi-4.1 !!
I had on old WinXP box I figured I'd re-use as an ESXi server. First was update to the latest BIOS to prevent the fan from running full-speed all the time. It was very loud and that's why it was stuck in the back of the closet for a year. Here's the specs:ThinkCentre M57e desktop, 4gb RAM
Lenovo motherboard, BIOS version 51KT54AUS
Intel G33/G31 Express chipset
Intel ICH7 82801GB/GR/GH SATA controller in ATA-compatible mode
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 on-board NIC
Core2Quad Q6600 2.4ghz LGA-775 CPU with VT-X
Original boot from ESXi-4.1 installer CD had it crash with "unable to load module: /usr/lib/vmware/vmknod/vmfs3
" error which indicated a non-compatible NIC. I used Martinbk's oem.sky2.1.22.tgz driver found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2794
I used Varazir's mkesxiaio_4.1.sh script to insert the 88E8056 driver into the ISO with instructions from here : viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4
. I ran this in an Ubuntu 9.10 NBR VM.
Then I burned it to a CD, booted it on the Lenovo M57e and no crashing! I installed on a USB stick and formatted all of the 160gb SATA drive for VM storage. Works great! Thank you to Dave and everyone on this site who made this possible!
