The Intel ICH*R controllers are what's known as software RAID (for fake RAID) and the drivers with ESXi don't implement RAID within the driver. The best you'll get is individual drives.

Dave...

Thanks for the info. Can you suggest a 2-port RAID card, moderately priced, that I could use? This desktop has a PCie x16 slot, a PCI slot, and two PCIe x1 slots. I will need to use the PCI slot for the PRO/1000 GT NIC, so the RAID card will need to be PCIe x16 or x1.

Thanks again for your help!

Chris

Dave...

Forgot to say, on top of all those restrictions, the card must be LP.

So a LP RAID card, PCIe x1 or X16, two channel, that will work with ESXi 4.1 u1.

If no such beast exists, then whatever you can recommend that will work.

Regards...Chris

I would take a look at LSI based RAID cards. Dell Perc 5 / 6 cards would be an option which you can get used. I'm not sure if they are LP or not.

Post Re: HP DC 7800 ESXi 5.1 or higher
Have you been able to upgrade the DC7800 to ESXi 5.1 or 5.5 ?

ESXi 5.0 works (one of the update builds) and the last package update in 5.0 installs without a hitch.

I have tried a few methods to install them including reinstalling from scratching using a 5.5 ISO, the install seems to fail with a purple screen of death before it actually gets to the full installation.

So does anyone here reading this have a working 5.1+ install of ESXi using a DC7800? (convertable mini tower / CMT) if so how did you get it to work? :P

My other system which is a Dell optiplex 755 (using the same Q35 chipset) works without any problems going to 5.5 - I've even installed 5.5 on the dell and tried to move the hard drive over...

I'd try to get more details about the issue however it fails before you are able to get any console's (f1 and f12) to show up.

Well I finally got it to work, this is what I did for those who are having issues, reinstalling 5.0 showed that the vt-d setting was not staying enabled regardless of what the bios said.

If you play with some of the settings in the DC7800 bios (enable/disable) certain things don't work like they are supposed to (even unplugging the power for awhile still may not help)

I've updated the bios and ME (AMT) firmware (In that order)
Loaded bios settings from default, saved and powered system off
Unplugged the power from the system for 5 minutes to reset the VT-D state (due to some protection mode these system bios' have - if you change the VT-D state the system can only reset by full power loss)

So now the DC7800 CMT is using ESXi 5.5.0 build 1623387 :D
