Hello,

so have you managed to create RAID virtual drive using SIL3512 controller?

Thanks

ESX(i) doesn't support RAID on software based RAID cards like the Sil3512, Intel ICH*R and nVidia MCP controllers.

Thank you. I'm wondering what is the cheapest solution to have 1U Rack server (can be used and buyed from eBay for example) with ESXi 4 working (only for management and backup - SATA 1TB-2TB drives configured as RAID1 virtual drive)

I would look for something that has at least EMT64 (if you're looking at Intel CPUs) and it would also require that the CPU support Intel VT (VT-x) if you want to run 64 bit VMs.

For storage look at something with an LSI controller as that will be hardware RAID. If you can find some samples you can post them here and we can take a look at them.

What do you say about this Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 2410SA controller:

http://cgi.ebay.pl/BRAND-NEW-ADAPTEC-AA ... 286.c0.m14

? It's quite cheap, it's on your HCL ESXi 4 list and according to its documentation:

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/ra ... AR-2410SA/

it allows max 1TB "per cable" (so RAID1 2*1TB = 1TB)

I want to put it to this Supermicro server:

http://cgi.ebay.pl/1HE-Supermicro-Serve ... 286.c0.m14

What do you think? Maybe some used server but from Dell "family"?

One thing with Adaptec cards is that you don't get health status on the card or drives in ESXi. For that you would need an LSI based card. If you're Ok without that then the card should be good (haven't used it myself).

If performance is critical, then look for something with battery backed write cache (perhaps a Perc 5/i - it's LSI based).

For the server I would just be careful with the CPU you get (making sure it is 64 bit (and optionally Intel VT or AMD-V for 64 bit VMs). Also you'll want at least 3 GB RAM.

Hi Everybody, i just made a new user just to post here.

I dont understand, the Sil3512 Controller is on the HCL list. i just bought 2 of these controllers (1 for production and 1 for backup in case that the 1st one burns).

im trying to make a raid1 array with 2x1tb WD drives, but when im installing ESXi i see the 2 drives and no LUNs. should i load a special driver to see the lun?

if this controller is in the HCL why i cant see my array?

thanks!
