Post Gigabyte GA-MA790GPT-UD3H
MB: Gigabyte GA-MA790GPT-UD3H
CPU: AM3 AMD Phenom II x3 720 BE (does support AMD-V and is enabled in BIOS)
BIOS: F4d (beta)
Mem: 8G DDR3 (2x4G Kingston)
NIC: Intel PCI-E 1Gb and have had the Onboard Realtec 8111 working via oem.tgz (did not appear to be 100% stable)
Storage: AMD750 SB SATA works - 1 1TB SATA drive (datastore) and 1 4G CF flash card on a SATA to CF adapter (boot drive)

I want to add a decent/low cost hardware SATA RAID controller since the AMD750's raid is software based.

Did not have to do anything to get the system installed other then install the Intel NIC.

System runs just fine and currently there are two VM's running just fine on the system.

I've had good luck with the Dell SAS 5/iR cards. If you are only looking to do a mirrors (raid-1) you really can't beat them.

You can find them for sale on ebay and at some of the "surplus" hardware places for around $30.

I went a little overboard and bought an Adaptec 5805 PCIe RAID card and set 3 1TB Drives up in raid 5. The system is fast and stable using this card. It will even boot off the Raid 5 disks. So far it has been a great little ESXi 4.0 system.

Sparc4...did you have to install drivers for the 5805 or did VMware take care of that for you?

Thanks

ESXi will recognize the 5805 without any changes and it is a supported controller.
