I can confirm that ESX 4.0 and ESX 4.0.1 is working on the Optiplex 745. I was able to install from a bootable DVD just fine.
Just make sure to upgrade the BIOS on your 745 to the latest version and enable the Intel Execute Bit option.

Thank you I built it on a spare 745 that had an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300.

Re: Successfully installed Esxi 4.0 on Dell Optiplex 745
Just installed ESXi 4.1 on a Dell Optiplex 745 (Core2 Duo 2.66GHz, 8GB RAM) with zero issues. NIC and SATA controller recognized.
I did have an issue with trying to set up a datastore on a Seagate 1.5TB drive. This is not related to the system, however. A Seagate 150GB drive and a Western Digital 250GB drive worked perfectly.
I did perform a BIOS update to the latest version available for the Optiplex 745. However, this was done after the ESXi install so it's definitely not required (the BIOS was original from 2007).
Another note, I installed ESXi to a 1GB USB flash drive and set up the system to boot from that drive. So, that works fine with this system as well.

Re: Successfully installed Esxi 4.0 on Dell Optiplex 745
I have tried to install ESXi 4.1 Update 1 on my Optiplex 745, and it stops at 15%. It complains about being unable to write to the hard drive. I have tried multiple hard drives, tried legacy mode & normal mode, but no luck.
Is there something I am missing?
Thank

I have installed ESXi 5.0 U1 on the 745 with no problems. Works nicely with 8GB of ram.
