Successfully installed and am now running VMware ESX 4.0.0 build-164009 on Dell PowerEdge SC1425. No special workarounds or other unusual aspects to the install, except that I used an external DVD-RW drive as the source media, rather than the internal CD-ROM drive (ESX 4.0.0 media is DVD, can't use CD media any more). Internal SATA drives are *not* configured for RAID -- two SATA drives installed, one is 76GB, this is root/boot/swap drive; second drive is 200GB SATA Maxstor. Second drive will be used to hold a larger Datastore for more VMs.

Is this using the onboard CERC SATA 2s or a CERC SATA 6ch card?

Sorry for the delay in answering ... Using the onboard SATA controller, which VMware reports as "82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller". There are two SAS/SATA connectors on the mobo -- I connected one HDD to each connector. I don't know much about Dell servers (this one came off a customer's scrap heap), so that's all I know about it.
