Working configuration, running ESXi4 from USB memory key.

Motherboard: ASUS M4A78-EM microATX
CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9650
Storage controller: HP branded LSI1064E sata raid controller.
Memory: 8GB memory
NIC: Intel Pro 1000 GT Desktop network adapter
Case: Thermaltake lanbox lite :P

On-board sata is detected, don't know if it works... Probably yes.

Hi,

I'm looking for a cheap setup to fool around with so i'm considering buying 2x M4A78-EM + 2x Athlon II 240 as a setup for ESX(i) 4.
want to setup HA, DRS, FT etc. etc.

Is there anything you have to change or can you install ESX / ESXi out of the box on this mobo ???

Is everything working or do you have to do some workarounds and if yes, which ?

Grtz,
Ivo (VCP)

Hello Ivo,

-Onboard LAN is not working. An Intel Pro 1000 card is about 20 euro / $30.
-Onboard sata is detected but i'm not using it. It probably works but not as RAID controller.
-Onboard graphics are OK too. Tip: set shared memory to 32MB instead of 256 or 512MB to save more memory for VM's.

But why get two systems?

You can run a virtual ESX on the physical ESX box and run a VM to provide shared storage (openfiler or something like that). With the Phenom and higher revisions you can even run a VM (32bit only) in the virtual ESX and VMotion it around. That's my setup.

I'd rather put 16GB in the server than buy 2 systems.

Does it support a 64 bit OS on VMware?
