To add a 3rd party driver to ESX(i) it has to be compiled specifically for ESX(i) as you can't use regular Linux drivers. The vmkernel of ESX(i) is able to use Linux based drivers but it is not Linux so you can't use the drivers in native format.

Typically users will add a NIC like the Intel Pro/1000 GT to gain NIC compatability.

Dave,

I have heard a lot about the Intel Pro 1000 GT, but what about the Pro 1000 MT? What's the difference in performance? The MT can be had on eBay for less than $15, shipped.

Is it a MT desktop adapter? I helped with an odd problem with a dual-port MT here - http://temp.vm-help.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... 1439#p1439. Otherwise you would see similar performance other than the MT being a bit of an older model.

Dave, thanks for the quick reply and info.

Yes, it's a PCI desktop adapter. Here's a link to one for $14, shipped.

The only other thing I would track down for it is the specific PCI id to make sure it is listed in simple.map.

Update...I recieved the Pro 1000 MT yesterday, installed it earlier and it's working like a champ with 4i.

I'm using a GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-US2H motherboard with Intel Pro 1000 MT NIC and default ESX4i install from VMWare.
