Post 4.1 on A8VDeluxe
I had ESXi 4.1 installed on a Asus A8V Deluxe mainboard for the longest time. The HDD just blew, so now I'm trying to install ESXi on a new HDD.

I had to put a jumper on my Seagate 7200.11 to force it down to SATA1 (1.5 GB/s) so the mainboard could recognize it.

I even bought a Intel 1000 GT Pro network card so I wouldn't have to worry with OEM.tgz...

Now, for some reason, ESXi 4.1 U3 and ESXi 4.0 installers will not see my HDD. I can't install.

The HDD controller is a: VIA VT8237. I had it installed before, what's the problem now?

Yes, I am 100% sure I am using the VIA VT8237 controller and not the promise one.

I've since installed Fedora 17 on the computer.

Boy, do I sure miss being able to log into VClient and have multiple OSes.

Help me vm-help.com. You're my only hope.

Here is my lspci -nn from Fedora 17.

I guess I need to run it from ESXi 4.1, eh?

According to that, everything shy of the NIC should work out of the box? So what's going on?

If you run the ESXi install and access the console (ALT+F1) and then run lspci -p is a module listed for the controller?

If the device doesn't appear, try to manually load the driver. vmkload_mod <path to driver/driver> - it'll be in this folder /usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod

So it doesn't load SATA_VIA or whatever it needs.

Okay, so it sees the SATA_PROMISE, so I decided to let it use the Promise controlller...

I defined a single RAID0 array on the single HDD I am using.

ESXi barfed on me.
I tried IDE mode, it barfed on me.

Only choice I have to load are SATA_NV.0 SATA_PROMISE.0 SATA_SIL.0 SATA_SVW.0

I remember now, the Promise controller never worked, or at least I couldn't get it to ever work.

That's what I had to use the VIA controller. But there are no drivers for it. How did I ever get that working?
