Post New version of Realtek R8168 oem.tgz
Hi, everyone.

I just put together a new version of the R8168 oem.tgz based on the oem.tgz posted which has the mods with rsync, wget, ssh and FTP servers, but uses the 8.018.00 drivers. I am running tests on it and will be letting it steep overnight along with connecting a VPN server for a while to see how well it will work.

Attached is that file; the only file which changed is the r8168.o file.

The system I'm using is a mini-ITX box with an Intel D510MO board running ESXi 4.0.0u1.

I will be bundling up my sources and posting them soonish so you can check them out or even build them yourself. My build environment is Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the gcc-4.1 package installed.

Regards,

--IJ.

So far so good. I've had it running for about 18 hours now and no issues of note have come up just yet. In fact, I have migrated nearly all the machines I had on my ESXi 3.5 box over to it (and that's quite a bit of data to migrate!) and have had no issues thus far.

Hope this driver helps!

As promised, here are the files you need to build the new R8168 driver.

One file, esx40-r8168-8.018.00.tar.gz, contains the actual driver source patched to build an ESX 4.0 driver. This tarball unpacks into the base of an already-unpacked vmkdrivers-gpl.tgz from the ESX public sources tarball. It also contains a vanilla build script based on the big script which builds only the R8168 driver.

The other file, r8168-8.018.00-esx40-diffs.tar.gz, contains the diffs against the original sources from Realtek. These are based on patches uploaded to the forums, adapted to be applied directly against Realtek's source code.

I hope everyone finds these useful.

Thanks for the build :)
NIC and services working with ESXi4-171294 on an Asrock A330GC (unfortunately 4.0U1 does not work with the Atom 330 CPU).

Since the FTP/SSH package available here does not work (segmentation fault when running proftpd), you are a life saver :)

Hi IRJustman!

You 8168 driver is great!
oem-r8168-8.018.00+ssh+ftp+wget+rsync.tgz [1.38 MiB]
Now I can use Realtek 8111E onboard Ethernet port in my Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 motherboard!
Only one small issue: every 20 sec in /var/log/vmkernel appear a new warning message. Is it possible to fix it, please!?

I wouldn't know. I had no idea 4.1 was even out until I saw this message. Besides, I have since retired that machine, though I suppose I could bring it back online for testing purposes.

I'm installing the patch upgrade-from-ESXi4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip right now, I'll let you know how it goes as soon as it ends.
