Post Dummy help for a great mistake i did
Hello guys
I intruduce myself, i am Roberto and i am from Milan, Italy.
as a stupid dummy i have bought a server that i plan to user with VMWare ESXi 4.0 without checking the hardware support page.. so i bought a HP Proliant DL320G6..
Installing i see that it was not able to support my raid card ( i am able to see all the disks, but not logical drive) and at that point i saw that model is not supported... so ... Well done to myself... and looking for a soluton.

i found some linux driver for my array card (smartarray B110i) and i found this forum looking for a way to customize ESXi4.0 installation CD.

What i would like to ask you guys, is if there are any guys that followed this street and knows that is blind, or i have to try :)

meantime i am reading all docs that saintgoogle retrive for me and the guide of this website.

Thanks too all and making experience i hope will be able in the future to help anyone else :)

cheers
Roby

Do you know what chipset the B110i is based on? So ESXi is able to see the individual disks just not the RAID array? It sounds like it is a software based RAID controller which as you've found ESXi doesn't support. The below link will show you the process to compile a driver but I'm not sure how far you'll get with software RAID, if it will be stable or what the performance will be like.

There are a number of LSI based RAID cards that will work and you can pick up cheaply.

Hello Dave
thanks a lot for reply
i am evaluating to buy an array card, that i saw is nativaly support by vmware.

that is the best solution, i am aware, but the satisfaction to customize the installation.... ;)

Looking for spec in hp page (http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/serv ... rs.html#2a) i saw you have right, it is a software array.

i just thought that if is there a linux driver, maybe somehow we can use that for vmware. however the street is to much tortuous and not reliable.

have you any suggestion for smartarray card that i can buy?

Thanks again for the info.

Bye

Roberto

Another card would be the safest route. If performance is a concern get something with battery backed write cache. It'll have a big difference in performance.

The e200 is listed here so it's not officially supported - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/esx40_whitebox_HCL.php. I'm not sure about the e200i.

With an LSI based card you'll get data about the status of the raid arry and disks. That's not the case with Adaptec based cards.

Hi the E200I will work with esxi4 we've used it on a few Servers ourselves, but the E200I is an integrated card so I don't think you can buy one off the shelf.

A better option would either be a P212 or P410 we've used both here sucessfully.
