yes I can see my disk. attached is the fdisk output and the var/log/messages.

You mentioned earlier that ESXi 4.0 was fine. So you could get through the install process with it and it would then boot OK?

You could just install it and then upgrade to 4.1.

Which method do you recommend for the upgrade from ESXi4.0 to ESXi4.1.

You can either use vihostupdate from the vCLI or Update Manager (part of vCenter Server).

New to the forum and about to try an ESXi 4.0 install modded using info here :)

Question:- is there any risk that the upgrade will wipe the changes made to in oem.tgz and stop the server booting?

The upgrade process won't touch oem.tgz, but you may need to review the contents yourself once in a while to make sure the changes in oem.tgz are still the best option.
