Post Customising ESXi 4?
Early days I know, but just wondering if ESXi 4 was going to be able to be customised in the same sort of way as ESXi 3.x? After downloading ESXi 4 tonight I notice that quite a bit has changed in file structure (there is no OEM.TGZ anymore), so it might pay to hang off for a bit for those of us using unsupported hardware with community drivers.

I was poking around in the files on the iso file,
I found a oem,tgz file in the dd image.

But I don't how to "use" it

in the oem file there was a file called empty-tar.tgz.temptar
allot of the files on the iso was called .temptar

There would not be an OEM.TGZ in the brand new released version because OEM means just that. It's an override file that is used to define devices and drivers that ESXi doesn't know about or doesn't have built in.

For ESXi , VMW has integrated a lot of the drivers that the community pack oem.tgz had added. For example, I've heard that the 3Ware Raid drivers are now part of the base ESXi 4 install and don't need to be added by the user.

I think the best thing to do is just try the 4 upgrade without your OEM file and see what it complains about. Then just add back the bits that are still missing.

oem.tgz isn't used in the install anymore, but you could just edit isolinux.cfg on the root of the CD to include it again.

Once you have 40 installed it has oem.tgz again. Simple.map and pci.ids are in the same place, but drivers are now in /usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod/

Attached is a image with the drivers. If you're upgrading it is worth it to see if ESXi will have a better driver and thus you might be able to drop using oem.tgz. Also the e100 driver is gone.

Well, the only device I have that wouldn't be officially supported is my Realtek Network card, which ultimately is not essential now as I went and got myself a Intel Pro 1000. Other than that all I'd be looking at doing is enabling SSH.

Hey Dave, I don't suppose you've had time to look at the Adaptec support in ESXi 4 yet? Do you know if anything has been updated here? It'd be nice to have the Adaptec agent installed in ESXi so I could use ASM remotely to manage my disks/arrays.

One correction on the above - pci.ids is actually at /etc/vmware/pci.ids. The old location has a link to the file.

Does anyone know how to install 3ware 9690SA in ESXi 4? During the install process it tells me that there is no storage controller...
