Post oem.tgz containing r8168.o module based on 8.016 src
I have ESXi 4.0 installable, and followed rockster70:
append vmkboot.gz --- vmkernel.gz --- sys.vgz --- cim.vgz --- ienviron.tgz --- image.tgz --- install.tgz

and you should change to

append vmkboot.gz --- vmkernel.gz --- sys.vgz --- cim.vgz --- ienviron.tgz --- image.tgz --- oem.tgz --- install.tgz

Also had taken his file for_installation.zip [185.47 KiB]
As a result, I have passed ESXi installation well, even have seen "r8168 was loaded successfully" from HDD, but finally got the same "No compatible NIC found". :-(
I have ASUS P5B with 8168B/8111B as many others posted.
Could somebody help to novice in ESXi?
(Sorry my English, I'm Ukrainian)

If you access the console during the install and run lspci -p is a module listed for the NIC?

Afraid I can't access console during install, as I'm dealing with ESXi installable, so no access to console expected. At least for me, as novice. When bootinf from HDD, afer install, system also stopped after the same message, I've seen before "No compatible NIC found". I mean, again, no access to console (as seems for me). :-(

You can access the console during the install for ESXi Installable - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/find_PCI_ID.php#ESX_ISO.

Booting from CD with r8169 in oem.tgz, has tried to access console, ALT+F1 on install screen, got: "Syslog is not configured for persistent storage" - and NO console and cusor on screen, no effect with ALT+F1 . :-(
Entered status terminal (ALT+F11), got two messages in red:
1. Elf: 2518: Kernel module r8169 was loaded, but has no signature attached
2. Warning: Syslog is not configured. Please check .....

In the vmkernel log (ALT+F12) had found more on r8169:
...
Gigabit Ethernet driver .... loaded
VMK_PCI: 739: device 003:00.0 capType 1 capIndex 64

vmink0: Identified chip type RTL8168/8111B
vmink0: RTL8168/8111B at 0x41000f60200, 00:1d:60:76:35:23, IRQ 145
...
VMK_PCI: 638: Device 003:00.0 name: vminc0
LinPCI: LinuxPCI_DeviceClaimed: Device 3:0 claimed
......
Mod: 2986: Initialization for r8169 succseeded with module id 29/
f8169 loaded successfully

AFTER THAT, message in RED, see above...

In case of booting from HDD, vmkernel last messages are:

sysboot: Executing 'esxcfg-init -N'
4524)PCI: 1784: 000:31.2 named ;vmhba0' was ' ')
4524)PCI: 1784: 000:31.5 named ;vmhba1' was ' ')
sysboot: No compatible network adapter found. Please ...
sysboot: 32.networking-drivers returned critical failure
sysboot Executing 'chvt 1'

Interesting is that according to vmkernel log, the same esxcfg command has completed sucessfully, when the system booted from installation cd, without any troubles!!! What is the difference between configuratin phase from CD and running from HDD, for the same command?!

Could somebody be so kind to help?

When you get to this point what output do you get for esxcfg-nics -l?

For me problem is that I still can't gain access to console for ESXi 4.o installable. I've read the post you referred on that, and try ALT+F1 on install screen - result is: system switched me to another screen (guess shell terminal), with the last message "Syslog is not configured for persistent storage." , NO access, means no cursor on screen, when I'm trying to enter something - no echo, no reaction at all.
At the same time, I can swith system to config terminal (Alt-F2), to status terminal (Alt-F11), and back to shell terminal (Alt-F1) - which is "dead" as it seems to me. No cursor, reaction on keyboard input. :-(
I don't know, how I can "login as root with blank password" as recommended by the post you mentioned, or how to enter any command including you recommend. :-(
All I can do is analysys of vmkernel log, and compare system reaction on different commands, like esxcfg during installation and running phases.
I've found, that during system configuration phase (boot from CD), in vmkernel log was:

sysboot: Executing 'esxcfg-init -N'
4521)PCI: 1784: 000:31.2 named ;vmhba0' (was ' ')
4521)PCI: 1784: 000:31.5 named ;vmhba1' (was ' ')
4521)PCI: 1784: 000:00.0 named ;vmhba2' (was ' ')
4521)PCI: 1784: 000:00.0 named ;vmnic0' (was ' ')
4522)Loading module r8168 ...
...
...
...
4522)r8168 loaded successfully.
...
...
4899)Boot Successful

And during system running phase (boot from HDD), in vmkernel log was:

sysboot: Executing 'esxcfg-init -N'
4524)PCI: 1784: 000:31.2 named ;vmhba0' was ' ')
4524)PCI: 1784: 000:31.5 named ;vmhba1' was ' ')
sysboot: No compatible network adapter found. Please ...
sysboot: 32.networking-drivers returned critical failure
sysboot Executing 'chvt 1'

:-)

Could you help me to understsnd, what's wrong with an access to console (shell terminal)? After that, I'll be able to move ahead. :?

have founded how to access console after ALT-F1 on "dead" screen shall be typed "unsupported", then you will enter Tech Support Mode, and can enter esxcfg-nics -l
I've seen:
...
vmnic0 03:00:.00 r8168 Down 0Mbps Half 00:1d:60:76:35:23 1500 Realtec Semiconductor Co., Ltd RTL811/8168B PCI Express.......
All this was when booting from CD (on install screen).

Same command at "running" system (boot from HDD), gave me empty string (only columns titles).

Please, guide me, what to do next, cause I haven't any ideas, as I'm novice in VMWARE.
I can't understand how the same hardware and drivers can give different results for esxcfg command during system installation and running.

Do you have a USB flash drive to use? (1 GB will be sufficiently large).
