Post 3ware 9550 installed ok but doesn't work after reboot
Hello,

I've used VMware at work for a while, but I've never customized using oem.tgz before. I have a machine with two 3ware 9550SX cards in it, one RAID 10 for VMs and one RAID 1 for ESX.

I got it installed thanks to this wonderful thread:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=337&p=6713#p6713

I spliced in the oem.tgz to a USB stick, created a kickstart file and it installed okay. After rebooting, it booted into ESX and came up but in the client I don't see any other storage devices to create a datastore (nor do I see the datastore that I thought was created by default using the installation destination).

I'm wondering if maybe the 3ware driver isn't getting loaded when it boots, but it did when it installed. However, it DOES boot and run, so it must be working somehow...?

Does anyone know what I might have missed? I basically copied the oem.tgz into the root of the USB stick to install, and that's about it. Do I need to copy that file into the root of the running ESX install, too? I notice that a 3w_9xxx.o file IS in /etc/vmware/..., so maybe it's there, I dunno.

Thanks,
Josh

ESXi uses the oem.tgz file in the root folder during the install process only. There's another copy in the dd image that gets installed. If you look at the sticky posts for this forum there is a script that creates a custom install image including updating the dd image.

It would take me longer to use the script than just do it myself. I figured it out, though. This is what's needed (it's easy), from hints elsewhere on this site and from here:

1. Install WinImage
2. Uncompress imagedd.bz2
3. Mount imagedd via WinImage
4. On the first FAT partition, replace the pre-existing oem.tgz with mine.
5. Umount imagedd via WinImage
6. Recompress to imagedd.bz2
7. Update imagedd.md5
8. Pie.
