You'd want to copy the tgz file to / bootbank and call it oem.tgz.

When I copied the .tgz file to the datastore I renamed it 9260.oem.tgz then copied it to the /bootbank . then did the tar –zxvf 9260.oem.tgz. Rebooted and nothing. So the name of the file would effect the installation of the drivers right?

If you look at the file boot.cgf (run the command cat /bootbank/boot.cfg) it will list the files that the vmkernel will extract and use to run. If you add a file to /bootbank it doesn't get used unless it matches a name in boot.cfg or unless you edit boot.cfg to include a reference to your filename.

If you haven't used another file called oem.tgz then it is best to take your file and copy it to that file name. If you want to use more than one custom tgz file then you just edit boot.cfg to include a refence to your new filename.
