Post Re: RTL8111/8168 and P55 integr. SATA Ctrl. (AHCI) for ESX 4
hi all.
Thank you for this great forum and for providing the driver.
I can now successfully install ESXi 4.0 U1.
Everything seems to go well, but when I try to install a virtual machine, I get weird behaviour, like read and I/O errors.

I do not use the internal SATA, but a Dell SAS 6 controller with 2 500 GB drives attached.
It does not matter if I install to the internal data store, or to an iSCSI attached Synology DS509+.

My system is a Asus P7H55-E barebone with a Core i5 750 CPU and 2x 2GB in the 2nd and 4th slot.
Does anyone know what might be the problem?
I am really clueless.

Thanks for any help.

Seems I just found my problem!
A defect memory simm!
Darn that piece of metal!
I finally thought of doing a memtest and found 1 of my 2 simms to be defective.

So: defecte simm gives i/o trouble on VMWare ESXi 4.0 , OS not booting, hanging etc.

Now all works fine, so I can confirm this oem.tgz works for my Asus V7-H55E or M .
Network adapter seems to work fine and SATA too.

Thanks you all, hope this helps anyone.

Thanks for driver!

Driver is working on my Asus P5B but there are some problems using this NIC on VM with windows installed.
During downloading large files to VM via Remote Desktop connection realtek adapter hung up. I need to disconnect cable or unload/load driver.
To make ftp connection Tx option for 'TCP Checksum Offload (IPv4)' in NIC advanced settings tab must be disabled. (default: Tx and Rx are enabled for VMXNET 3 adapter type).

Sir
I had same problem whit on ASUS P6T. I use USB run EXSI 4.0 Seem fine.

hi ,

I used the driver and oem.tgz attached to the first post of this thread.
Then I used a script to build the custom VMware image.

You might do a search for your NIC type in this forum and check your exact hardware, because some people seem to use another one.
For me this one works fine.

Hope that helps!

Hi,geppi:

I have a similar motherboard, but the model is Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3l, which sata driver is different from yours.

Could you tell me where to download "the ESX Open Source distribution" (I gusee the file name is VMware-esx-public-source-4.0-162945.tar.gz ?), I can't find it on VMware website.

Could you give me a link?
Thanks!

I believe it is in the OSS Source Code for ESX, ESXi an ESXi Embedded here - http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/data ... pen_source.

Thanks, but there's only source for ESXi 4.0 update2.
which is VMware-esx-public-source-4.0-262155.tar.gz

I'm trying to build a driver for my sata (Intel 3b20 and 3b26), and find the method offered by geppi does not work anymore.

One cannot simply add(or modify) device ID in ahci.c.

Any help is appreciated.

From the open source page you can get ESXi 4.0 and 4.0 U1 files as well. Were you able to get the driver source file - i.e. along this path - VMware-esx-public-source-4.0-262155.tar.gz\VMware-esx-public-source-4.0-262155.tar.gz.temptar\vmkdrivers-gpl.tgz\vmkdrivers-gpl.tgz.temptar\vmkdrivers\

I used driver from this topic: http://www.vm-help.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1525 to solve problem.

In attachement oem.tgz witch updated simple.map.

I have problems too with the driver of this thread. After about 5 minutes, the driver crashes and I am unable to connect to and from the hypervisor.

I think that we could remove the driver from this page as many users pointed out this problem.

I will try the oem.tgz posted by frutis.
