I went to console after booting from the drive and tried the 23 step process to add support for the realtek 8169, but it didn't work. I'm assuming it's because I didn't boot from a USB. I did notice that the pci.ids file has the description for the 8169, so I think all I need to do is add this line to the file.

10ec:8169 0000:0000 network r8169

Would I be better off trying a new install with the custom oem.tgz file provided from ... ods-0.1.gz,
or try booting from a USB and modifying from the process I used. leaving out steps 8-11?

I'd taking a working oem file and customize the install media with Varazir's script.
