Post subject:  Support for AMD 79c970 Ethernet adapter cards

Greetings.

I'm trying to add support for my Advanced Micro Devices 79c970 Ethernet
adapter cards on my ESX 3.5 update5 installation. I have the PCI ID.
I think they should be supported, in the 'Community Unified oem.tgz v1.1.0'
i found them under

103c Hewlett-Packard Company
____1064 79C970 PCnet Ethernet Controller

What should i do now? How do i Modify oem.tgz on the
Hypervisor1 partition? What driver do they use? Please help.

I would start with the driver in the oem file. Copy it to your system, extract the tgz and then place the driver in the correct folder. Not sure what it was with 3.5 but it's /usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod for 4.0. When you extract the file you'll see where it should go.

Then run vmkload_mod <path>/<driver_name> to try to load it . If it works you should then be able to run esxcfg-nics -l and see the new nic.

Thank you, Dave

I realize now that i see the 103C:1063 HP 79C970
just in pci.ids, not in simple.map, so it looks like it's a no-go.

Any suggestions, or should i just give up?

Unless the NIC can use a driver from a compatible NIC then you'll need to look at something else. If the NIC is driver compatible with another model, try the vmkload_mod command to see if the driver will recognize your NIC. The driver will use PCI ids coded within the driver and not simple.map for that.
