Post subject:  question about ICH5

Hi guys. I am trying to install esxi 3.5 on an IBM 8194-22M. I searched for a long time on VM-HELP. However, didnt find out how to modify oem.tgz, such as where to find the suitable driver, how to add into oem.tgz. Can some one shed some light please. Storage controller :8086-24D1 ICH5. Thanks a lot!

ESXi will try to load the ata_piix driver for this controller - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Hardwa ... .php#Intel.

What sort of error do you get during the install? Can you get to the ESXi console and run fdisk -l to see if ESXi is able to load the driver OK and recognize a disk for your system?

Thanks for the reply David. Fdisk -l cant find the drive.
However, i made some changes in the BIOS, and the installation can start!
There are 3 options in BIOS about ATA

Parallel ATA: Both
Serial ATA: Enable
Native Mode Operation: Auto/ATA
I changed the Native Mode to ATA, then problem solved. Do you know why?
PS:On other PCs i installed ESXI 3.5 before, i chose SATA:compatible.

Changing the mode also changes the PCI id so you end up with another driver being loaded.
