If you take a look here you'll see that ESXi can't recognize the storage controller - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi3. ... le.map.php.

First thing, what mode in the BIOS is the controller set to? You'll need to go through this process to add the device 03f6 to simple.map and pci.ids. The easiest way I find to do that is to boot ESXi from a USB flash drive rather that trying to modify the install CD.

You could try the modified oem.tgz package from this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=39

I've downloaded it and it includes a 10de:03f6 entry in the simple.map along with a custom (?) sata_nv_n.o module. I've yet to try it myself, but haven't got around to it yet. I'm running two "production" esxi boxes with an Asrock ALiveNF6G-GLAN mobo with the same chipset/pciid. I had already tried to modify the simple.map with an entry for 10de:03f6 pointing to the sata_nv.o module included with esxi, but that resulted in an error on load.

I can confirm the oem.tgz from the mentioned thread works :D
Finally got around to it today to test it.

@Dave: no problem, my pleasure. I've been following your site for a while now and really appreciate all the info on it and the efforts you and other people put into it, so I'm happy I can contribute ;)

Maybe you can update this page http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/customize_oem_tgz.php with the new info here.
(Adds support for Realtek 8168/8111C Ethernet adapter)

The oem.tgz in the mentioned thread is actually based on the Community Unified oem.tgz and included driver support for all the devices in the Community Unified oem.tgz and also driver support for the realtek 8169 nic.
